Bikoi Protest Against ACC levy rises for motorcycles
The Bikoi on Tuesday 17th November was a nice sunny day which saw a turn out bigger than expected by organisers. With perhaps 7,000 bikes from gathering points at Lower Hutt & Porirua meeting at the junction of SH1 and SH2 north of Wellington, it was a great thing to be a part of and a lot of fun. As I said to my mates on the day, looking at the crowds - "This amounts to a lot of days off!"
The police were brilliant at helping with traffic control and being reasonable, and the ones I spoke to seemed very supportive of our right to protest. Apart from some chap narrowly avoiding being bowled by a taxi who squeezed into the bike convoy from Petone, there were no accidents or incident that we saw. Funny that - you would think with 7000 bikes and the kind of figures ACC have turned up in their dodgy analysis that there would be at least 1400 accidents?
I saw in the news that ACC were analysing 'over 1000 submissions' - come on bikers! I know a number of the Harley boys can't write, but I would have hoped to get 50,000 submissions written at least! What a let down. Unless of course, the figure given was done on the ACC counting system...
Seems like Nick Smith is not going to pay much attention to the protest. I myself look forward to the next protest - without several thousands bikes parking up at Westpac Stadium we can make ourselves much more known in the capital.
We don't want to piss people off but we are pissed off and need to share the pain...
If you want to get involved or find out more about the unreasoned 'logic' behind the proposed rises in ACC for 2 wheeled transport, please take a look at Bikers Against ACC.

I've never voted Labour in my life. But I see Phil Goff is a motorcyclist (and not just for votes - he used to have commando I heard) and he has been standing up against this joke. Maybe he is worth listening to.

News today says Nick Smith has 'listened' - rates are not going up that much. But as a mate of mine predicted when this all started "ACC will suggest an outrageous figure, expect a protest, then it will be trimmed back (but still be a big rise) and they'll tell us 'You Won' and most people will let it go." I'm getting on my bike again...
